The Simple Past Tense ( source: Practical English Usage; Michael Swan )
We use the simple past for many kinds of past events: short, puickly finished
actions and happenings, longer situations, and repeated events.
I cleaned the room yesterday.
They watched TV last night.
Affirmative | Question | Negative |
I worked You worked He/she/it worked etc | Did I work? Did you work ? Did he/she/it work ? etc | I did not work You did not work He/she/it did not work etc |
( cotracted negatives : I didn’t work, you didn’t work etc. )
The regular past ending –ed is pronounced as follows:
ü /d/ after vowels and voiced consonants ( except /d/ )
played comed listened cleaned
ü / t / after unvoiced consonants( except /t/ )
asked helped watched washed
ü / Id / after /d/ and / t/

Most of regular verbs: Add -ed | work worked play played clean cleaned rest rested |
Verbs ending in –e : Add – d | close closed arrive arrived |
Verbs ending in one stressed vowel + one Consonant( except w and y ): Double the consonant and add -ed | shop shopped |
